City of Ithaca Investigating Possible Illegal Dumping in City Sewer System
The city of Ithaca is investigating the dumping of an unknown cleaning chemical into their public sanitary sewer system.

Representatives from the City Waste Water Treatment Plant say the chemicals were dumped sometime either Saturday or Sunday.

Representatives with the Ithaca Waste Water Facility say a significant volume of an unknown cleaning solution, solvent, or other chemical was dumped into the public sewer system.

They don’t believe the discharge came from someone's home, they believe the chemical entered from a building drain or manhole cover.

By the time the substance reached the Ithaca Area Wastewater Treatment Facility, it was toxic to the microbes, which are key in the treatment process
.
Anyone with information on the discharge is asked to call (607) 273-8381 or email egottlieb@cityofithaca.org.
