Firefighters Respond After Tractor Trailer Crashes Into Gas Pump in Polkville Today
An employee at a gas station in the Cortland County hamlet of Polkville prevented a serious fire this morning after tractor trailer struck a gas pump and ripped the pump from its base.

Cortlandville and Cortland City firefighters responded to a report of a tractor trailer on fire at the Express mart gas station near the intersection of Route 11 and Route 41 in Polkville this morning.

Initial reports indicated that the rig was on fire, upon arrival firefighters found that an employee at the store had used a small dry chemical extinguisher to put out what was described as a small fire.

According to Cortlandville Fire Commissioner Kevin Whitney, the tractor trailer driver drove into the gas station through an entrance designed for smaller vehicles, in the process his trailer snagged the pump and ripped it from the base. A small amount of fuel was discharged and may have sparked.

New York State Police responded to the scene and were investigating the damage.
