With winter arriving in Central New York this past weekend Greek Peak in Virgil plans to make snow this week and expects to have a limited number of trails open this coming Friday.
Greek Peak Mountain Resort is taking advantage of the sudden drop in temperatures and will make snow with the goal of opening on Black Friday.
The operator’s plan to open the Iliad trail and the Alpha beginner slope and possibly Castor. Ticket prices will be reduced to reflect the number of trails open. Lessons and gear rentals will be available; the tubing center is expected to open Saturday.
While plans are subject to change, Greek Peak expects to run lifts from 9:30 to 4 p.m. Friday, and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The resort would close back up to allow for snowmaking through the following Thursday.
This is Greek Peak’s first season operating under new owners. Elmira businessmen Marc Stemerman and John Meier bought the resort out of bankruptcy proceedings in March and took control in April.
It’s also the first year with a new quad chair lift; the new lift is expected to be ready by Dec. 21st, guests will also be greeted by the newly expanded and renovated Trax Tavern, which will open the second weekend of December.
