Election Day 2013, Voter Turnout Expected to Be Low
It’s Election Day, voters will head to the polls today to cast their votes in local elections, with no statewide or federal contests voter turnout is expected to be lower today.

Here in Cortland County there are no contested countywide seats. Republican County Judge Julie Campbell is running unopposed.
 
The race that has garnered the most attention is the three way race for Cortland City Judge. Democrat Elizabeth Burns is vying to become Cortland’s first female justice. Burns faces a challenge from her primary opponents Ron Walsh and Mike Schaffer who are both running on independent lines following their September loss.
 
There is only one contested City Council race, newcomers Cliff Dutcher and Larry Carr are both vying to replace Republican Dan Quail who did not seek re-election after serving for several terms.
 
There are a handful of contested races for County Legislative seats. Republican Legislative Chair Mike Park faces a challenge from Democratic candidate Allan Gandelman.
 
In the 12th legislative district which represents McGraw and portions of Cortlandville Joe Steinhoff Jr. and Richard Nauseef Jr. are running to replace Republican Danny Ross who did not seek reelection after several years on the legislature.
 
In the 16th district which covers Cuyler, Solon, and Truxton there is a three-way race to replace Democrat Kathie Arnold who is not seeking reelection to the legislature; Arnold is instead seeking a seat on the Truxton Town board.
 
Democrat Alison King, Republican James Denkenberger, and independent candidate Richard Palmer are all vying for the seat.
 
In the 17th District which covers Taylor, Cincinnatus, Willet, and Freetown Republican Charles Sudbrink is running against Democrat Joanne Brown to replace Republican Dave Fuller who also did not seek reelection.
 
There are several contests for Town Highway Superintendent positions this year. The Towns of Cuyler, Freetown, LaPeer, Taylor and Homer all have contested races.
 
The Towns of Harford and Truxton have contested Town Supervisor races and there are contested Town clerk races in Freetown and Cuyler.
 
There are also contested Town Council races in Cincinnatus, Cortlandville, Cuyler, Freetown, LaPeer, Preble, Scott, Solon, Taylor, Truxton, Virgil, and Willet.
 
Two write-in candidates, Christopher Sammonds and Sara Watrous have mounted write-in campaign agiant Homer Town Board incumbents Kevin Williams and Barry Warren.
 
There is also a Town Justice race in Homer; Democrat Doug Moss is running against Republican William Foley.
