Tompkins Legislature Votes to Extend Additional Local Sales Tax
Friday, August 30, 2013
The Tompkins County Legislature has voted to extend the County’s additional one percent sales tax.
The added sales tax has been in effect since 1992, the vote last night extends it through November 2015.
The additional one percent tax has generated more than $10 million in revenue for the county since it was enacted.
Legislator Mike Lane called it “a tremendous waste of time” for both state and county government to have to go through the renewal process every two years, and called for the matter to be removed from the realm of politics and the tax to remain in place, once authorized.
