Cortland City Council Tables Request to Fill Vacant Firefighter Position
The Cortland City Council has rejected a request fill a vacant position in the City Fire Department.
For the second time in two weeks the City Council has rejected a request by City Fire Chief Chuck Glover to fill a vacancy created by the retirement of a Captain in the City Fire Department.
Glover has asked to fill the position to help maintain required staffing levels, but also to help reduce overtime expenses.
Last night City Mayor Brian Tobin urged the council to delay filling the vacancy pending the development of the 2014 City budget.
Tobin says he would like to examine the staffing needs for the department as part of the preliminary and final budget process.
Tobin pointed out that the soonest training academy for the new firefighter would not be held until early March, this gives the council time to talk about the request and also avoids paying a new firefighter who would be limited in duties until they completed the training academy.
The council voted 4 to 3 to table the request until mid October.
