The City Police Department is investigating after the body of a man was found floating in the Tioughnioga River this morning.
The body was discovered shortly before 9 o’clock this morning by two young men walking along Rickard Street, they spotted the corpse floating in the water just above the Rickard street Bridge. The two witnesses asked employees at the Cortland Machine and Tool shop on Grant Street to call for help.
Rescuers with the Cortland city Fire Department and T-L-C Ambulance service responded to the scene, they used rope to slowly haul the victim out of the river.
The victim a white male believed to be in his 40’s was wearing a dark tee shirt and shorts. Police have not confirmed his identity; they say he did not have any identification on him. Investigators were combing the river near where the body was found in a search for any clues or evidence pointing to how the man may have wound up in the water.
Cortland County Coroner Kevin Sharpe responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead, the body was sent to Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. City Police were working with State Police in an effort to identify the man.
