Cortland Police Investigating Fatal Accident That Occurred Wed. Morning
A Cincinnatus woman is dead after she jumped out of a moving vehicle on West Main Street in Cortland.
Just after 9:30 this morning Cortland City Police and Firefighters responded to several 9-1-1 calls reporting that a person had been hit by a truck near 63 West Main Street.
Police say 38 year old Jupina Rice of Route 41 Cincinnatus was a passenger in 1997 Ford Pickup Truck operated by her husband 29 year old Joshua Rice. As the couple and their four children were traveling in the truck Mr. And Mrs. Rice became involved in a verbal argument.
At some point during the disagreement Mrs. Rice jumped out the moving truck, and was run over in the process.
Mr. Rice apparently attempted to swerve to miss his wife; he stopped the truck immediately and attempted first aid on his wife.
Mrs. Rice was taken to the Cortland hospital just a few hundred feet away from the accident scene, where she was pronounced dead.
Mr. Rice and the couple’s four children were uninjured in the accident.
City Police say they are investigating; no charges have been filed at this time.
The Cortland Police Department was assisted by the Cortland Fire Department, TLC Ambulance and the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit.
