Cortlandville Woman Facing Arson Charges May Be Suffering From Mental Health Problems
A Cortlandville woman who is facing several felony charges in connection with a fire that damaged a multi-unit apartment building on Valley View Drive my be suffering from mental health problems.
 
59 year old Susan McMahon who is accused of starting a fire May 7th that caused nearly $20 thousand dollars worth of damage to an apartment building at 3811 Valley View Drive may be suffering from mental disorders that led her to set that fire.
 
Around 2:30 in the morning local firefighters responded to a reported fire there, the fire damaged three of the seven apartment units.
 
According to the building owner Robert O’Gorman McMahon has lived in the complex since 2012 and there have been no issues.
 
On the morning of the fire, O’Gorman’s son Trevor called to say there was a fire and that he was working to evacuate the other tenants in the building. Trevor O’Gorman told police McMahon was acting strangely and kept trying to re-enter her apartment, even attempting to climb under a fire truck to get back inside.
 
An investigation revealed that the apartment started in McMahons apartment; Police say she placed photos and clothing on her stove and lit the items on fire.
 
McMahon was taken to the Cortland Regional Medical Center for a psychological evaluation, while there she was interviewed by County Sheriff’s Deputies. During the interview McMahon gave strange statements to officers saying that she burnt the pictures and items in an effort to eliminate the memory of a man named Richard.  McMahon said she didn’t want to hurt anyone and was only trying to make this individual leave her alone. During the interview McMahon asked to speak to her Pastor and an attorney.
 
McMahon has been charged with felony counts of arson and criminal mischief; in addition to 11 felony counts of reckless endangerment for placing the lives of other residents in the building in jeopardy.
 
McMahon appeared in Cortlandville Court Tuesday, Town Judge Francis Casullo order she undergo another psychological evaluation, she’s due back in court one the report is completed, she’s currently being held without bail.
