Tompkins County Sheriff’s Deputies say a young man was injured yesterday when he jumped off a 60 foot cliff near the Giles Street dam.
With the warmer weather many people especially thrill seekers are looking for ways to cool off, the cliffs around Ithaca become attractive targets for swimmers.
Around 7 o’clock last night Tompkins Sheriff’s Deputies along with Ithaca firefighters responded to a report of some hurt at the Second Dam located off of Giles Street.
Police say a 23 year old man had jumped from the "sixty foot" cliff into the lower portion of the dam however the man missed his landing and wound up injured.
The unidentified man was removed from the gorge by friends; he was later airlifted to a regional hospital. The investigation is ongoing. Swimming and cliff jumping in the gorges is prohibited, violators face not only injury but citations as well.
