Disease Outbreak Forces Quarantine at Vernon Downs Race Track
Monday, May 6, 2013
It was a big weekend for horse racing; unfortunately a contagious disease outbreak at the Vernon Downs horse track has temporarily suspended operations there.
An outbreak of horse herpes has shut down racing temporarily at the central New York harness track.
Five horses tested positive for equine herpes and one had to be euthanized. They were all from the same trainer and housed in the same barn.
Racing was cancelled Saturday night and all horse barns are under quarantine for 14 to 21 days.
Equine herpes is a highly contagious respiratory disease in horses.
