Cortland Man Convicted of Multiple Counts of Rape and Sex Abuse to be Sentenced Today
A Cortland man who was found guilty of multiple counts of rape by a county jury last fall will found out his fate today.
48 year old Frederick Brown of 5 Crawford Street Cortland was been found guilty on all 14 counts against him including rape in the 1st, 2nd, and third degree as well criminal sex act and sex abuse during his October trial
Brown was arrested in 2011 following a 13 month long investigation by Cortland City Police. Brown raped a young girl from the time she was 12 until she was 16. The woman, who is now 23; brought the allegations to police after she turned 21.
Prosecutors say Brown was able to use his family connections to keep the girl quiet about the abuse and threatened to harm the girl’s mother if she came forward.
The case presented difficulties for both sides, as there was no physical evidence linking Brown to the rapes and the fact that the victim had waited so long to come forward.
County Judge Julie Campbell will hand down the sentence today, Brown faces 12 ½ to 25 years on the top count.
