Global Backyard Bird Count Exceeds Expectations
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology reports that the first worldwide Backyard Bird Count has shattered expectations.
Bird watchers from 101 countries participated in the count which ran from Feb. 15-18.
Organizers say it was the largest global bird count ever, bird watchers counted more than 25.5 million birds on 119,000 checklists in four days — and recorded 3,137 species, nearly one-third of the world’s total bird species, as of Thursday morning.
Following the success of bird counts over the past 15 years in the United States and Canada, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Audubon and Bird Studies Canada expanded the count globally this year.
