Hundreds of educators are taking part in activities in Ithaca this week as part of the 7th annual Ithaca Winter Recess week sponsored by the Ithaca Tompkins Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Winter Recess is aimed at school teachers and employees, enticing them to spend their winter break in Ithaca by offering special entertainment, activities, family fun and discounts throughout Ithaca and surrounding communities.
Tompkins Chamber Director Fred Bonn says nearly last year the weeklong event generated $700,000 in economic activity for Tompkins County. The largest portion of the spending came from food and beverage, with local operators bringing in an estimated $322,000 during the week.
In addition the event also provides a boost in occupancy tax, which paid when guests rent rooms at area hotels. 11% of the attendees stay at least one night in a hotel or bed and breakfast.
While the events and activities do cost money, there is no cost to take advantage of Winter Recess discounts – registration is free of charge. For more information on the schedule of events log on to www.ithacalovesteachers.com
