Groton Man Charged With Welfare Fraud
Tompkins County Sheriff’s Investigators have charged a Groton man with welfare fraud.

On Wednesday police arrested 30 year old Calvin Hayes of Groton.  Hayes was charged with 2 felony counts of offering a false instrument for filing, a felony charge of welfare fraud, and a misdemeanor charge of welfare fraud.

Police say the arrest stems from a lengthy investigation conducted by the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office and with the assistance with the Department of Social Services Fraud Investigations Unit.  They say Hayes filed applications for assistance that contained false information; Hayes received over $3,000 dollars worth of public benefits that he was not entitled too.
Hayes was arraigned in Ithaca City Court and released on his own recognizance; he’s due back in court on the 27th.
