Marathon Fire Department Wins Big at Firefighter Winter Games
The results are in from this weekend’s 8th annual firefighter winter games which were held at Greek Peak in Virgil and the ice arena at SUNY Cortland, some of Cortland County’s Fire Departments did very well in the competition.
Firefighters from more than 31 departments across New York state turned out to compete in the State Firemen's Association annual Winter Games this weekend. The event was cosponsored by the Cortland County Firemen’s association.
Over 60 teams from 12 of New York's counties participated in this year’s games.
On Saturday participants braved 15-degree temperatures to participate in snow tube racing, sled pulling and tug of war.
The Coventry Fire Department took 1st place in the tube race with Marathon team #2 in second place followed by Medford Fire Department team #4 in 3rd place.
In the sled pull the Marathon Fire Department’s team #1 took 1st place, followed by Baldwinsville, and Lakeside in third.
In the hose relay, which requires teams to run 100 feet with a 50-foot lengths of fire hose and connect them together in the fastest time. The Marathon team #2 took 1st place, followed by Marathon’s team #1 in 2nd and the Killawog Fire Department in 3rd.
The McLean fire fighters took 1st in the tug of war, Killawog was 2nd, and Groton was 3rd.
At Sunday’s broomball tournament Chenango Bridge was in 1st place, Homer Fire Department team #1 was 2nd, with the Manlius Department in 3rd.
The Homer Junior Firefighters won the youth broomball competition.
The overall tournament champs and Cortland county champs are Marathon team #2.
All participants in the Winter Games receive medals and the top three teams in each event receive trophies. Every year, the winner of each event is honored in The Volunteer Firefighter magazine.
