Cortland County Hosting Firefighter Winter Games This Weekend
More than 300 firefighters from 31 departments will be in Cortland County this weekend as part of the annual Firefighter Winter Games.
The games are sponsored by the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York, and are coordinated by the Cortland County Firemen’s Association.
More than 200 rescuers dressed in full turnout gear will compete in events at Greek Peak in Virgil and at the SUNY Cortland campus.
While the games are meant to be fun, they are also aimed at supporting training exercises and team building among volunteers. The hose relay event requires participants to work together in the same way they would during an actual fire.
County Firemen’s Association Secretary and local volunteer Doug VanEtten says hosting the games is an honor for Cortland County and a great opportunity to showcase the community.
VanEtten says the games will be even more poignant this year following the loss of firefighters in Webster and Owego.
Registration for the games begins today; the games kick off on Saturday and continue Sunday. The events include a sled pull, tube racing, tug of war, hose relay and more.
Every year, the winner of each event is honored in The Volunteer Firefighter Magazine. All participants in the Winter Games receive medals and the top three teams in each event receive trophies.
