'Fracking' Protests Dominate D-E-C Budget Hearing, Lawmakers Holding Press Conference Demanding More Information
Anti-fracking protestors packed into the state capitol yesterday, they used a D-E-C budget hearing to push for transparency, to allow for public participation in the health review process and to conduct a full health study before making a final decision on “fracking”.
Busloads of protestors attended the hearing, many were critical of the Governor’s proposed budget for the D-E-C which does not include additional funding to account for increased agency inspections and reporting in connection with “fracking”.
Governor Cuomo has said his budget doesn't include increased spending for “fracking” regulation because DEC hasn't completed its environmental review and decided whether to end a 4 ½-year-old moratorium.
Democratic Assemblywoman Barbra Lifton who represents portions of Cortland and Tompkins County is joining other members of the Senate and assembly today in a press conference demanding that Department of Health reveal the intent and scope of the current fracking public health review, release of the D-E-C’s health impact analysis, more public hearings, and a 30 day comment period to give the public time to review and comment on the health departments study.
