Unemployment Jumped in Cortland County at the End of 2012
The unemployment rate in Cortland County spiked in December climbing 1% over November’s rate.

The jobless rate shot up to 9.1% last month and increase from 8.1% in November, in December of 2011 the unemployment rate locally was 8.6%.
The higher rate can be partially attributed to the slow start to the ski season; local resorts did not add jobs.
Last month over 34 thousand private sector jobs were added in New York, that  brings the state's overall year-to-date private sector job gain to  just over 123 thousand.
The most significant increases were in construction, transportation, education and health. The biggest losses were in leisure and hospitality and manufacturing. Over the past year, private sector jobs grew most rapidly in Glens Falls (+3.6%), Ithaca (+3.5%), and New York City (+2.4%).
Between November and December 2012, New York State's unemployment rate fell from 8.3% to 8.2%.
