1890 House Museum Cuts Ribbon On New Front Steps

After several years of fundraising the 1890 House Museum in Cortland has brand new front stairs that restore the main entrance of the Victorian home.

Yesterday 1890 house board members, supporters and local officials cut the ribbon on the recently renovated stairwell.

According to museum Director Michelle Grimes, the project that included removing the original stone staircase, resetting the stone rails and installing new stone stair treads cost $90 thousand dollars.

Grimes say its essential to the overall success of the museum that the front stair was restored.

Former Cortland industrialist Chester Wickwire built the 122-year-old limestone mansion. Members of the Wickwire family lived in the elegant home until 1973. In 1975 the home was purchased by the County Landmark Society and opened to the public as a museum.

Cortland Mayor Brian Tobin was on hand for the ribbon cutting of the renovated stairs, Tobin says the museum is a benefit to community; it preserves local history and serves as showplace for visitors to the community.

Among the donations for the project was $5 thousand dollars from the Ted Finstermacher foundation. Finstermacher was a former Cortland attorney; his trust continues to support philanthropic activities in the community.

First Niagara Bank Foundation and other corporate donations along with community donors also supported the project.

On Sunday, from 1 to 4 pm, the museum will hold its Annual Holiday Wassail Party and Open House. Refreshments will be served and local choirs and musicians will provide entertainment.
