Unemployment in Cortland County Dropped Slightly in November
Unemployment in Cortland County dropped slightly in October, but it’s higher than it was a year ago.
The jobless rate here in Cortland County dropped one tenth of a percent from 7.8% in September to 7.7% in October. In October of 2011 the rate was 7.4%.
New York added 5,900 private sector jobs last month, with statewide unemployment down from 8.9 percent in September to 8.7 percent. In the 52 Counties Upstate, private sector jobs grew by less than 1% over the last year.
The biggest job gains were in the professional and business services sector. From October 2011 to this October over 52 thousand jobs were created in that sector. The second largest increase was in education and health care.
The sector with the greatest loss this year has been construction, which shed over 12 thousand jobs.
Tompkins County once again leads the State with the lowest unemployment at 5.8% followed by Putnam County at 6.5%.
