A local dairy cooperative that buys milk from 70 local dairy farms cut the ribbon on its new cheese shop in Polkville Thursday.
The Just Say Cheese Shop offers the public a chance to purchase products made from locally produced dairy.
The Cortland Bulk Milk Dairy Cooperative represents dairy farmers in a seven county region, including Cortland County. Cooperative President Stuart Young who owns a dairy Farm in East Homer say the idea behind the retail store in Polkville is to give customers an option to support locally produced food items.
Among the items at the store is Chobani Yogurt, which is made in neighboring Chenango County; the Cortland Dairy Co-op sells about 10 million pounds of milk to Chobani each year. Other products include items from Stoltzfus Dairy in Oneida County. In the future Young is hoping to carry Byrne Dairy products after the company announced this month plans to build a yogurt processing facility here in Cortland County.
Dairy products aren’t the only things you’ll find in the new Just Say Cheese shop Young says other products like Maple syrup and locally produced meat can be purchased at the new store.
The store will be preparing gift baskets for the upcoming holiday season; they are open Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 and Saturday from 10 to 1.
