Homer Firefighters Respond to Large Outdoor Fire
An unauthorized outdoor fire at an construction company in the town of Cortlandville got out of hand Thursday afternoon.
Homer firefighters responded a fire involving piles of old Astroturf at the Adhan Piping Company located on Route 13 near the intersection of Lighthouse Hill road.
The fire was reported just before 1230 Thursday afternoon.
Upon arrival rescuers encountered thick black smoke and flames that were spreading up a hillside into a wooded area.
Gusty winds fanned the flames forcing a call for additional help; the Cortlandville Fire Departments tanker truck was brought to the scene as well.
Workers at the construction company used bulldozers to dump dirt on the burning astro turf to suffocate the fire. The smell of burning plastic filled the air. No injuries were reported and no property was damaged.
By the time the blaze was out firefighter had poured more than six thousand gallons of water on the burning turf.
In addition to Homer and Cortlandville, Cortland and Preble were placed on standby.
The fire started as the result of an illegal controlled burn and apparently spread, the Department of Environmental Conservation was called in to investigate, tickets were pending.
