Cortland Man Accused of Trying to Torch His Apartment Following Fight With Neighbors
A Cortland man is facing an arson charge after he attempted to set his apartment on fire.

Cortland City Police have charged 45-year-old Steven Birtwell of 8 Union Street with a felony count of arson and a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment.

Police say around 2:30 this morning Birtwell was involved in a fight with his neighbors, during the argument he threatened to burn the house down.

Police say Birtwell then went to his apartment and placed flammable items on the stove and started them on fire. Neighbors called for help.

The City Fire Department responded and put out the small fire, no damaged was caused but it did fill the house with smoke.

No injuries were reported. Birtwell was awaiting arraignment today in Cortland City Court.
