Cortland County District Attorney Debate Tonight at Elks Club
Cortland County District Attorney candidates Mark Suben and Keith Dayton will face other in the only scheduled debate this campaign season.
At 5:30 this evening at the Cortland Elks Club on Groton Avenue the two men will meet face-to-face and answer questions about why they are looking to serves as Cortland County’s top prosecutor.
Suben a democrat has held the job for the past four years after beating former Republican D-A Dave Hartnett. Suben’s republican challenger this time around is republican Keith Dayton. Dayton has served as the County’s public defender for the past 12 years, he was not reappointed this year, he currently serves as the assistant Cortland City Attorney.
During previous interviews Suben has pointed to his experience as an assistant prosecutor in the Bronx and his recent victories in the Randy Thibeault murder trial, the conviction of Pat West in another Cortland homicide case. Suben says his policies have created a much more efficient office and has helped to reduce the backlog or criminal cases in the local justice system.
Dayton has questioned Suben’s record including cases where police officers have been injured in the line of duty and the suspects in those cases have been offered reduce sentences as part of plea bargains. Dayton also has said that the D-A could do a better job reducing the County jail population and in turn reduce expenses to taxpayers.
