Agriculture Report Outlines The Importance of Farming in N.Y
That State Comptrollers office has issued a report affirming what many economic development leaders already know; farming in the state is big business.
 
New York’s farming industry accounted for $4.7 billion worth of products sold in 2010, according to a report released Monday.
 
State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s analysis found New York’s over 36 thousand farms were among top producers in the nation.
 
Dairy farmers reported the largest portion of the agricultural sales, accounting for about $2.2 billion of the total, the report ranked New York as the fourth-largest milk producing state in the country. New York ranked first for cottage cheese and sour cream production. New York is a leader in yogurt production, which reached 553.7 million pounds in 2011, an increase of 140 percent since 2008.
 
DiNapoli’s report was issued in advance of his visit Monday to the State Fair.
 
The state’s wine grape crop also represents are large portion of the agriculture sector the grape, grape juice and wine industries.
 
The state’s Wine Crop contributed more than $3.7 billion in economic benefits to the state's economy in 2008.  New York ranked second nationwide in wine production and third in grape production for wine and juice in 2010. 

New York was the second-largest U.S. producer of maple syrup and cabbage in 2010, and the third-largest producer of corn for silage.
 
Central New York, which includes Cortland, Madison and Cayuga Counties, accounted for 12 percent of agricultural sales statewide. Almost two-thirds of the region’s sales came from milk and other dairy products. Other key products are cattle and calves, grains and beans. Cayuga is a large producer of milk, soybeans and corn.
