Tompkins Lawmakers Affirm Legislative Reduction
Thursday, September 6, 2012
The Tompkins County Legislature has voted to redraw county voting lines and decrease the size of legislature by one seat.
The Tompkins County legislature will go from 14 to 13 seats under the plan adopted Tuesday evening.
The move means two current legislators one in the Town of Ithaca the other in the City of Ithaca will have to run against each other if they both want to vie for a seat on the legislature.
The redistricting plan passed with a 10-5 vote.
The vote was preceded by multiple public hearings and several hours of discussion. The legislature appointed an independent panel that recommended the reduction based on the latest census figures.
