Lansing Man Killed in Town of Dryden Car Crash
A Lansing man has died following a three-car accident Friday morning in the Town of Dryden involving a former Cortland City Police Officer.
61-year-old Joseph Bruno of Lansing was traveling southbound on Freese Road in the Hamlet of Varna Friday morning when he failed to yield at the stop sign at the intersection of Route 366.
Police say Bruno pulled in front of a vehicle driven by 44-year-old Charles Niederhofer of Homer.
Niederhofer, who retired from the Cortland City Police Department, now serves as a patrol officer with the Cornell University Police Department.
After being struck Bruno’s car traveled across the intersection and struck a third vehicle on Mt. Pleasant Road. The third car was driven by 35 year old Kathleen Mullen of Fitchburg, Mass.
Bruno was taken to Cortland Regional Medical Center with internal injuries, then moved to Upstate Medical Center, in Syracuse where he was pronounced dead later in the day.
Bruno was an accomplished musician in the Ithaca area, playing the bass for the past 30 years, most recently with Pete Panek and the Blue Cats.
Calling hours for Bruno are Tuesday September 18th from 3-6pm at the Lansing Funeral Home.
