Lifton Applauds Drilling Delay, While Landowner Group Derides Decision
Democratic Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton is thanking Governor Andrew Cuomo for his decision to conduct a review of the public health impacts of the gas drilling technique known as hydrofracking.
Lifton has been calling for a comprehensive health study on the impacts associated with drilling.
Lifton said she was shocked that such an important and prominent concern has been completely overlooked during the environmental review process.
While Lifton was pleased with the decision to delay the issuance of final drilling rules pending the health review she is concerned about the independence of the study. Lifton wants doctors, medical experts and scientists who have voiced concerns to be aware of how this study is being done and to be fully-engaged in the process.“
Last week, Lifton called on the D-E-C and the Governor to withdraw the current environmental review of gas drilling after an Ithaca based environmental research firm released a report that found water pollution from existing gas wells in New York.
The Joint Landowners Coalition of New York, a group representing several landowners looking to lease their mineral rights for gas drilling released a statement yesterday expressing its frustration with the this latest delay.
The group knock Governor Cuomo saying he “simply doesn’t care that they are struggling to pay the highest property tax rates in the country."
